Israeli Pres. Peres Urges Obama to Free Pollard; Obama Says He Will Not Free the Convicted Spy

The Global Post website reports today (April 10, 2012) that Israeli President Shimon Peres sent a personal letter to President Obama yesterday, urging the U.S. to release Jonathan Pollard -- a convicted spy for Israel -- due to his deteriorating health.

The convicted spy was a former civilian intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy.

He was arrested in 1985 for photocopying classified documents and giving them to his Israeli counterparts.

After initially trying to seek refuge in the Israeli embassy, Pollard was convicted under the Espionage Act and sentenced to life in prison in 1987. The White House confirmed yesterday that President Obama has no intention to release Pollard from prison.
