The Greek Orthodox Church of the U.S. -- which has some 1.5 million members -- on June 22 installed its first new leader in 20 years, the Religion News website reports today (June 26, 2019).
Epidophoros Lambriniadis, 51, a native of Istanbul and a longtime theology professor in Greece, was enthroned as archbishop in a ceremony at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan.
Epidophoros was unanimously elected by senior Greek Orthodox officials last month to succeed Archbishop Demetrios, who retired at the age of 91 after serving in the post since 1999.
For Archbishop Epidophoros, his first priority is to complete the construction of New York's St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church that was destroyed in the 9/11/ 2001 terrorist attacks.
