The Quebec government passed a bill on June 16 barring schoolteachers, police officers, judges and other public employees from wearing religious symbols in the workplace, the NY Times website reports today (June 19, 2019).
Francois Legault, premier of Quebec province, had called the bill a necessary measure to ensure the separation between religion and state in a secular province.
It applies to Muslim head scarves, Jewish skullcaps, Sikh turbans, and Christian crosses, among other symbols.
Legault had also argued that the bill -- which passed 73 to 35 -- was supported by a majority of Quebecers.
