The Pentagon announced late today (June 17, 2019) that it is sending another 1,000 troops to the Middle East in response to Iran's "hostile behavior" of attacking two oil tankers in the Persian Gulf last week, according to the NY Daily News website.
Acting Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan said in a statement that the deployment decision was made in consultation with the White House and Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff.
The troops will serve in a "defensive" capacity to address "air, naval, and ground-based threats in the Middle East," Shanahan said, citing "hostile behavior by Iranian forces and their proxy groups."
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said yesterday that the U.S. had "unmistakable" evidence to prove Iran was responsible for the oil tanker attacks last week. He also openly mulled military action against Iran.
