Former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz was shot yesterday in the Dominican Republic, the UPI website reports today (June 10, 2019).

Ortiz, 43, was shot in the back by a motorcyclist at the club Dial Discotheque in Santo Domingo, Dominican National Police spokesman Felix Duran Mejia said.

"The bullet went through his stomach," he added, saying that Ortiz's condition was "confidential."

Ortiz -- nicknamed "Big Papi" -- retired from Major League Baseball in 2016, after playing for 20 years. He won three World Series championships, won the AL Silver Slugger title seven times, and was named the World Series MVP in 2013.
