US Withdraws from UN Pact on Refugee Rights; Claims It's Not Compatible with US Sovereignty

The Trump administration today (December 2, 2017) withdrew the U.S. from a U.N. pact to improve the handling of migrant and refugee situations, deeming it "inconsistent" with its policies, according to the AFP (Agence France-Presse) website.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N, Nikki Haley, said the U.S. would continue its "generosity" in supporting migrants and refugees, but "our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone."

She added, "The global approach in the New York Declaration [to support migrants and refugees] is simply not compatible with United States sovereignty."

Under Trump and his "America First" policies, the U.S. has withdrawn from several global commitments, including the Paris climate deal.
