Russia said yesterday it was ready to become "an honest mediator" between the Israelis and Palestinians -- a role the U.S. has played for decades -- after a vote in the UN Security Council showed the depth of global opposition to U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the Times of Israel website reports today (December 19, 2017).
Washington vetoed a resolution supported by all of the other 14 Council members that would have required President Donald Trump to rescind his declaration on Jerusalem.
Russia's deputy UN ambassador Vladimir Safronkov said it was becoming more important to move "as quickly as possible towards direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations."
Turkey criticized the U.S. veto, saying Washington had lost its "impartiality" in the Middle East. Last week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he will no longer allow the U.S. to serve as mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, as he wants East Jerusalem to be the capital of a future Palestinian state.
