Lebanese Police Hit Rioters with Tear Gas,Water; Result of Trump's Jerusalem Capital Recognition

Lebanese security forces fired tear gas and water canons at protesters near the U.S. Embassy in Beirut today (December 10, 2017), during a demonstration against President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, according to the Independent (British) website.

Demonstrators waved the Palestinian flag as they lit fires in the street and threw projectiles towards security forces, who had barricaded the main road leading to the embassy in the Awkar area of the capital.

Some protesters burned an effigy of the U.S. President, as well as American and Israeli flags and piles of garbage, sending plumes of smoke into the air. As protesters hurled stones, security forces responded with tear gas and water cannons.

The White House announcement on Jerusalem last week has ignited protests across the Middle East, where it is widely seen as a blatantly pro-Israel move that threatens the decades-old peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.
