Pope:Scribes Must Avoid Sins of Communication; Asserts that Reliable Information Is Most Critical

Pope Francis, in speaking to a group of journalists today (December 16, 2017), addressed the importance of a free and responsible press while also warning against falling "prey to the sins of communication," according to the NPR (National Public Radio) website.


He was speaking to members of the Italian Periodical Press Union and the Italian Federation of Catholic Weeklies, and said that in a field "dominated by the anxiety of speed, by the drive for sensationalism," reliable information is at a premium.


"We must not fall prey to 'sins of communication:' disinformation that is giving just one side of the argument slander, which is sensationalistic or defamation..." Francis said.


He added, "They are very grave sins, which damage the heart of the journalist and harm people.
