Tens of Thousands Protest against Govt. in Iran; Call on Supreme Leader Khamenei to Step Down

Anti-government protesters demonstrated in Iran today (December 31, 2017), in defiance of a warning by authorities of a tough crackdown, extending for a fourth day one of the most audacious challenges to the clerical leadership since pro-reform unrest in 2009, according to the Reuters website.

Police in Teheran, Iran's capital, fired water cannon to try to disperse demonstrators.

Tens of thousands of people have protested across the country since December 28 against the Islamic Republic's unelected clerical elite and Iranian foreign policy in the Middle East.

Demonstrators initially protested over economic hardships and corruption, but now a growing number of people are calling for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to step down.
