Suspected gang members killed 39 people in the past two days in Karachi, Pakistan -- with many of the victims tortured, shot, and stuffed in sacks that were dumped on the streets -- the Washington Post website reports today (August 18, 2011).
The government has been unable -- or unwilling -- to stop the violence, as it grapples with a dismal economy and a raging Islamist insurgency.
Seventeen people were killed in Karachi yesterday and another 22 today, said Saud Mirza, police chief of Karachi.
Many of the victims were tortured, shot in the head, and stuffed in burlap sacks, Mirza said.
