COMMENTARY: Elmhurst College's "Minority" LGBT Policy Is a Joke

It was revealed this week that an Illinois college -- affiliated with the United Church of Christ -- will become the first college in the nation to ask prospective students their sexual orientation.

Elmhurst College -- located just west of Chicago -- said its decision to add sexual orientation to the 2012-13 admissions applications is aimed at promoting diversity on its campus.

The sexual orientation question -- which prospective students are not required to answer -- asks: "Would you consider yourself to be a member of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community?" Applicants answering "yes" are eligible for a minority scholarship that covers one-third of tuition.

That's right -- a "minority" scholarship. In other words, a person who is a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender individual is considered a "minority," while a person who is heterosexual is considered a "majority" in this situation.

This labeling of "minority" individuals -- due to their sexual orientation -- is a misnomer and has no pragmatic basis whatsoever. Being a "minority" because of one's sexual orientation makes no more sense than being a religious "minority" because one is a Roman Catholic, a Greek Orthodox, or a Jew, instead of being a WASP (White Anglo Saxon Protestant).

To add fuel to the fire, Elmhurst College is affiliated with the United Church of Christ. It is surprising that this Christian denomination would agree to Elmhurst mocking Christianity by promoting -- and even rewarding -- this unChristian LGBT policy.

Moreover, the fact that no other American college or university asks about one's sexual orientation on its admissions applications indicates that such a question is personal and unethical, if not illegal.

It's bad enough that Elmhurst College is the only college in the United States to ask about one's sexual orientation on its admissions applications. Even worse, Elmhurst is providing large scholarships to LGBT students because it considers them to be a "minority" that promotes "diversity" on its campus.

The fact is that such a scholarship is a joke -- some prospective students who are not LGBT will most-likely claim to be so on their applications, in hopes of receiving a "minority" scholarship -- but the joke is on Elmhurst College itself, as many people laugh at its one-of-a-kind "minority scholarship policy."

I agree. It is a sign of the times that a church affiliated college arranges a tuition advantage for gender confused students.
