The Europe News website reports today (August 20, 2011) that Islamic mosques are being built more often in France than Roman Catholic churches, and there are now more practicing Muslims in France than practicing Catholics.
More than 150 new mosques are currently under construction in France -- home of the biggest Muslim community in Europe -- according to Mohammed Moussaoui, president of the Muslim Council of France.
The total number of mosques in France has doubled to more than 2,000 during the past 10 years.
By contrast, the Roman Catholic Church in France has built only 20 new churches during the past decade, and has closed more than 60 churches -- many of which will become mosques.
Only 1.9 million people in France are practicing Catholics, while 2.5 million people are practicing Muslims, according to a report released August 1, 2011 by the French Institute of Public Opinion.
