The Greek Reporter website reports today (August 22, 2011) that -- under the scope of reforms in the Greek Family Law -- the Shariah (Islamic Law) has been abolished for Greek Muslims.
The Muslim law had established the right of polygamy and gave only to men the right to divorce their wives, which caused discrimination against women in Greece.
Moreover, Shariah did not comply with the Greek constitution which established the equality of Greeks regarding the application of the laws and the equality of men and women.
Under the reforms of the new law, the Mufti will only be religious leaders of Greek Muslims, and will no longer have judicial authority.
