The Europe News website reports today (August 5, 2011) that Muslims in Spain started the Holy month of Ramadan this week, during which time they must not eat, drink alcohol, smoke, or have sexual relations until sundown.
During the fasting period -- which starts when the sun comes up -- the faithful have to pray five times a day, facing the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca -- Mohammad's birthplace.
Around 95 percent of Spain's 1.5 million Muslims are expected to participate in this year's Ramadan, which ends on August 30 with the huge Aid al-Fitr -- a major Islamic fiesta.
