A 23-year-old medical student -- whose rape by six men on a bus in the Indian capital of New Delhi earlier this month sparked violent protests across the country -- was flown to Singapore today (December 26, 2012) for use of the most up-to-date equipment for her medical treatment, according to the Today Online website.
The major goal is to arrange for an organ transplant for the unidentified woman -- who has been fighting for her life since the hour-long rapes -- which saw her struck by an iron bar, and ended with her and a male companion being thrown off the moving bus.
Large parts of her intestines were removed as a result of the injuries from the attack. Her condition worsened on Christmas day when she suffered a cardiac arrest and was revived by cardiac pulmonary resuscitation, her doctors said.
The government of India -- which has agreed to pay all the expenses of the woman's transportation and treatment in Singapore -- has made arrangements for her to be shifted in a well-equipped air ambulance to a renowned hospital, so that she can be provided state-of-art medical treatment that may stretch many weeks, according to one of her doctors.
