KY Church Overturns Ban on Interracial Couples; Votes to Welcome Believers Regardless of Race

The Associated Press website reports today (December 4, 2011) that an eastern Kentucky church -- whose members recently voted to bar mixed-race couples from joining the congregation -- overturned that decision today, saying it welcomes all believers.

Stacy Stepp -- pastor of the Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church in Pikeville -- said the vote by nine people last week was declared null and void, after it was determined that new bylaws cannot run contrary to local, state, or national laws.

He also said the proposal was discriminatory; therefore, it could not be adopted.

Stepp added that about 30 people voted unanimously today on a new resolution that welcomes "believers into our fellowship regardless of race, creed, or color."
