The Reuters website reports today (December 10, 2011) that Palestinian leaders believe Newt Gingrich -- Republican candidate for U.S. President -- has instigated more conflict in the Middle East by calling Palestinians an "invented people" who want to destroy Israel.
Hanan Ashrawi -- a senior Palestinian official -- said today that Gingrich's "very racist comments" showed he was "incapable of holding public office."
Believed by many Americans to be a ploy by Gingrich in order to receive Jewish votes in his bid for the presidency -- and one that will in effect backfire and be detrimental -- his rude statement regarding Palestinians has been viewed as being racist, ignorant, and arrogant, and as an obstruction to peace in the Middle East.
Some Americans have compared Gingrich's statement with another ignorant one made by veteran White House reporter Helen Thomas, 91, in June 2010, which resulted in her losing her job at Hearst News Service. Thomas -- a Lebanese American Orthodox Christian -- at that time told the Jews to "Get the Hell out of Palestine, and go back to Germany and Poland."
