The Christian Broadcast Network website reports today (December 7, 2011) that U.S. House Speaker John Boehner -- before lighting the Capitol Christmas Tree yesterday -- said the evergreen represents "everlasting life" in Christ.
Boehner also said Christmas is about Jesus Christ, "whose birth to Mary fulfilled a prophecy of joy and salvation."
The 65-foot white fir from California was illuminated as the Army Band and a children's choir from California performed Christmas carols.
Congressman Jeff Denham -- whose district grew this year's tree -- said he felt overwhelmed by "the significance of being able to celebrate a religious holiday because of our freedoms in this great country."
