Afghan President Hamid Karzai has pardoned an Afghan woman serving a 12-year prison sentence for having sex out of wedlock, after she was raped by a relative, the Associated Press website reports today (December 1, 2011).
Karzai's office said the woman and her attacker have agreed to marry. A judge had previously offered the woman freedom -- if she agreed to marry the rapist -- but at that time she refused.
More than 5,000 people signed a petition urging Karzai to release the woman.
In Afghanistan and in other predominantly Islamic nations, women -- who are convicted of adultery or having sex out of wedlock -- can be stoned to death, as stated in the Islamic holy book, the Koran.
