The Voice of America News website reports that a Palestinian bid for full United Nations membership today (November 11, 2011) failed to win approval in the UN Security Council committee that deals with new members.
The Palestinians now will probably go to the UN General Assembly where they hold observer status as an "entity," and if they get a two-thirds majority approval -- which is very likely -- they will upgrade to "non-member state" observer.
This would expand their ability to participate in UN activities, such as being signatories to some international treaties.
Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour said that the Palestinian leadership -- together with its Arab and other partners -- would decide what UN route to take in the coming weeks.
