Benetton, an Italian clothing company, presented several disgusting images this week in a new advertising campaign. One of these images shows Pope Benedict XVI kissing a Muslim imam on the lips.
Benetton's advertising theme this year is titled "UNHATE," thus explaining the reason for its image of the Pope and imam kissing. Nonetheless, this kind of image is totally uncalled for, and shows a lack of respect by Benetton toward both Catholicism and Islam.
The Vatican -- just one day after the image was released at a press conference in Paris -- took legal action against the Italian clothing company by demanding it end its circulation of the Pope's image. Benetton quickly removed the image from its advertising campaign.
We believe that the Vatican should pursue this defamatory photo with a libelous lawsuit against Benetton. A fine of several million dollars -- which is a fair amount for this defamatory photo -- would deter the Italian clothing company from displaying disgusting photos in the future.
Indeed, Benetton's disgusting images for promoting its clothing -- something it has done for decades -- must now end.
