Cardinal Bernard Law -- the American prelate most closely identified with the sex-abuse scandal -- has been removed from a ceremonial post at the Vatican, according to the Catholic Culture website.
On November 21, 2011, the Vatican press office announced -- without mentioning Cardinal Law's name -- that Archbishop Santos Abril Castello had been approved Archpriest of the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
The post had been held by Cardinal Law, now 80 years old, since 2004.
In December 2002, Cardinal Law resigned his post as Archbishop of Boston, after an investigation -- led by the Boston Globe -- revealed that the cardinal had knowingly given new pastoral assignments to several abusive priests, while covering up evidence of their misconduct.
