The Catholic Culture website reports today (November 10, 2011) that Pope Benedict XVI suffers from a degenerative joint condition in his legs.
The Vatican did not disclose this condition of the Pope; however, journalist Andrea Tornielli revealed it to the Catholic Culture website.
In October, the news that the Pope was towed into St. Peter's Basilica on a rolling platform was alarming. The official announcement from the Vatican press office only said the platform was used "to alleviate the efforts of the Holy Father."
A degenerative joint condition can be painful, but it is not life-threatening. Nonetheless, the Vatican has kept Pope Benedict's condition secretive, just as it had refused to confirm that Pope John Paul II had Parkinson's disease.
