Islamist militants al-Shabab have banned teachers from using bells to signal the end of class in Jowhar, Somalia, because they sound too much like Christian church bells.
A previous order was declared this month (April 2010) by the Hizbul-Islam group that forbids radios from playing music, because music is un-Islamic.
According to the BBC website, teachers in Somalia are now using hand-claps -- instead of bells -- to bring classes to an end.
In recent months, the Islamist militants have also carried out hand-amputations and lashings for theft, and stonings for adultery.
Somalia has not had a functioning central government since 1991; consequently, the Islamist militants control most of its territory.

Not a surprise as bells were outlawed by Muslims so that Christians had to use pieces of wood.
