The Hindu governor of India's Meghalaya state has at a mass gathering of Presbyterians hailed the role of Christian missionaries in spreading a message of "love, trust, and peace in the turbulent tribal societies" of the country's northeast.
The presence of Governor Ranjit Mooshahary and his sermon last Sunday excited many delegates at the 39th general assembly of the Presbyterian Church in India.
On the other hand, some church leaders were angry because a non-Christian had been allowed to address a solemn worship service.
However, Rev. S.S. Majaw -- who heads Communication for the Presbyterian Church in India -- told the Ecumenical News International (ENI) website that, "It should have been treated as an honor that the head of the government came to our worship service and addressed us."
