Serbian Parliament's Chair of Foreign Policy Suggests Dividing Kosovo to Solve Its Problem

Dragoljub Micunovic, chair of the Foreign Policy Committee in the Serbian Parliament, said last week that giving up part of Kosovo is one of the possible solutions to the Kosovo problem.

This represents a significant twist in Serbian politics toward Kosovo, since Serbia had never considered this as an option previously, according to the Balkan Insight website.

After Kosovo's ethnic Albanians broke away from Serbia and declared the province of Kosovo to be an independent nation in February 2008, Serbia -- rejecting Kosovo's declaration of independence and considering it to be illegal -- referred the matter to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Judges of the ICA are expected to deliver their opinion on Kosovo in early summer this year.

Micunovic expressed his hope that the ICJ would propose an international conference on Kosovo, along with its opinion on the legality of Kosovo's declaration of independence.

The United Nations, the European Union, and most nations in the world -- including Serbia -- do not recognize Kosovo as an independent nation.
