Police in France Fine Female $29 for Wearing Full Islamic Face Covering While Driving Car

A 31-year-old French woman was fined for wearing a niqab (Islamic face covering) while driving, according to France 24 website.

The unnamed woman told a French TV station that police stopped her last month (March 2010), while she was driving her car in the city of Nantes, near the French Atlantic coast.

Police handed her a 22-euro ($29) fine, saying her clothing posed a "safety risk" to her driving.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy supports legislation that is expected to become law next month to ban the face-covering veil in France. Sarkozy said the Islamic veil demeans women.
