Saudi Arabia's Kong Salman today (September 26, 2017) issued a historic royal decree granting driving licenses for women in the kingdom as of next June, according to the Al Arabiya website.
"This is a great victory for many Saudi women. This was the one file and issue which Saudi women have fought not just for years but decades for..." Latifa Shaalan, a Saudi female member of Saudi Arabia's Shoura Council told Al Arabiya.
Currently, there are some 800,000 men -- mostly from South Asia -- who work solely as drivers to Saudi women, who are not allowed to drive motor vehicles.
Many Saudi families are not able to afford paying a driver a monthly salary. The new royal decree will help ease this financial burden.
