EU Court Rules Hungary Must Accept Migrants; Hungary Calls Ruling "Appalling, Irresponsible"

The highest court of the European Union (EU) rejected a legal challenge today (September 6, 2017) from Hungary and Slovakia against a mandatory quota to accept migrants from Greece and Italy, according to the Euro News website.

EU leaders agreed to the policy to relocate 160,000 people from the Mediterranean countries back in September 2015 as Europe struggled to find ways to deal with an influx of migrants.

Hungary and Slovakia wanted to have the scheme canceled, but the judges dismissed their argument.

Although the EU court's decision is final, the Hungarian government warned the "real battle" was about to begin. Hungary also called today's ruling "appalling and irresponsible."
