Women Seeking Abortion Warned of Suicide Risk; Court Rules in Favor of SD Abortion-Suicide Law

The Christian Broadcast Network website reports today (July 29, 2012) that a federal appeals court has ruled that doctors in South Dakota must warn women seeking abortions of an increased risk of suicide if they go through with the procedure.

The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld that portion of a 2005 South Dakota law on the suicide advisory. Planned Parenthood has been suing to overturn the law.

But the judges wrote: "The suicide advisory presents neither an undue burden on abortion rights nor a violation of physicians' free speech rights."

The court also confirmed that statistics show women who have had abortions have higher rates of suicide compared with women who have given birth.
