The Catholic News website reports today (July 1, 2012) that less than two-thirds of Brazilians now identify themselves as Catholics, marking a record decline in what is considered to be the world's largest Catholic country, according to new figures from the country's latest census.
Only 64 percent of the Brazilian population of 191 million identifies itself as Catholic, said the figures, taken from the 2010 census.
In the year 2000, Catholics comprised almost 74 percent of the population, down significantly from almost 92 percent in 1970.
On the other hand, the number of Brazilian Christian evangelists has risen, up about seven percent to 22.2 percent from 15.4 percent in 2000.
