The China Post website reports today (July 14, 2012) that the number of people in Taiwan with membership in religious venues grew steadily for the fifth consecutive year to 1.59 million, according to a national survey by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) in 2011 and released today.
Taiwan has 27 different religions -- the four major ones being defined by the MOI as Taoist, Buddhist, Protestant, and Catholic -- with the majority being Taoists.
The overall annual growth in religious membership was 1.82 percent, while the number of religious buildings increased by 0.74 percent.
The number of Protestants in the country grew the most last year, with an annual increase of 2.98 percent compared with 2010.
