Statue of Christ Stolen from Outside NJ Convent; Trenton Councilman Offers $250 for Its Return

The New Jersey On-Line website reports today (July 4, 2012) that a four-foot-tall statue of Christ was stolen from outside the convent at Divine Mercy Parish in Trenton this week.

The nuns first noticed the statue was gone on July 2, but they were not able to get city police to come out and take a report until yesterday afternoon, Sister Karen Crawford said.

Crawford -- who has spent 18 years at the Grand Street convent -- said she has no idea why anyone would want to rip the statue from its base outside the living quarters of three nuns.

Trenton Councilman George Muschal said he is offering a $250 reward -- from money out of his own savings -- for the monument's return. He added, "It's worth every dime to see them (the nuns) happy."
