Va. Man Guilty of Fighting for IS for 3 Months; Testified He Just Wanted to "Check Things Out"

A Virginia man, who joined the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria and Iraq for three months, was convicted yesterday of terrorism charges, despite his assertion that he was only there to "check things out," the Military Times website reports today (June 8, 2017).

The jury in U.S. District Court took only four hours to deliberate before convicting Mohamad Khweis, 27, of Alexandria, on all charges.

He faces 20 years or more in prison when he is sentenced in October.

At his trial, Khweis told the jurors he just wanted to see for himself what the Islamic State group was like. He added that after a few months, he realized it was not for him.
