Jewish Deli in Chicago Area Hit with Hate Crime; Message "Free Gaza" Spray-Painted Outside Deli

A popular Jewish deli in suburban Chicago was vandalized in what is being investigated as a hate crime, the JTA (Jewish Telegraphic Agency) website reports today (June 20, 2017).

The message "Free Gaza" was spray-painted on the sidewalk outside the Shmaltz Deli in Naperville, Illinois on June 18.

"The reason they left it [the message] there, obviously painted it there, is because it is a Jewish deli," Naperville Police Commander Lou Cammiso said.

Deli owner Howard Bender cleaned the graffiti and hung a sign where the words were spray-painted reading "Hate Has No Home Here."
