Mayor of Rome Pushes to Halt Migrant Arrivals; Says Rome under Much Pressure from Migrants

Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi has written to the interior ministry asking for the Italian capital to be removed from the list of migrants being sent there, the Euro News website reports today (June 14, 2017).

More than half a million migrants have reached Italy by boat from North Africa since 2014.

The mayor emphasized that Rome is under strong pressure from migration and that it can't go on.

Only around a third of Italy's 8,000 city governments have offered to shelter asylum seekers.
