Turkey Schools Now Required to Have Mosques; Teachers Union Slams Prayer Rooms as Unconst.

Turkey's Education Ministry unveiled new regulations this week that require every new school in the country be outfitted with gender-separated Muslim prayer rooms, the Euro News website reports today (June 29, 2017).

The new regulations were published in the government's official newspaper and call for public and private schools under the purview of the government to also have an area for ritual washing before praying.

The prayer room will be required for Islamic worship, according to the new regulations, which the Labor Union of the Laborers of Education and Science decried as going against the Turkish constitution.

The teachers union accused the Turkish government -- led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan  -- of "abandoning secular, scientific and contemporary education" and replacing it with religious studies.
