The Pentagon said today (June 13, 2016) that US Apache helicopters have struck an Islamic State (IS) target for the first time in Iraq, according to the AFP (Agence France-Presse) website.
The attack choppers destroyed an IS car bomb yesterday near Qayyarah, which is about 50 miles south of Mosul, the militant group's main stronghold in Iraq.
Pentagon chief Ashton Carter has since early December told the Iraqi government that the US military is willing to use Apaches based in Iraq to support local forces.
But the government until now had declined. The Apache strike came as Iraqi forces advanced towards Qayyarah with the eventual aim of retaking Mosul.
