A French man, 25, arrested with an arsenal of weapons and explosives has been accused by Ukrainian police of plotting a string of terror attacks before and during the Euro 2016 football tournament that begins in France on June 10, The Guardian website reports today (June 6, 2016).
Ukraine's state security service stopped the man in a white van last month near the border with Poland. Inside the vehicle, they found five Kalashnikov semi-automatic rifles, two anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades, 5,000 bullets, 100 detonators, and 125 kg (275 lbs.) of TNT, as well as balaclavas.
Ukrainian officials said the man was planning to carry out 15 attacks on bridges, railways, synagogues, mosques, and public buildings, including tax offices and motorways. He has been identified as Gregoire Moutaux, a farm worker from the Lorraine area of eastern France.
"The Frenchman spoke negatively about his government's migration policies, the spread of Islam and globalization," Vassil Hrytsak of the SBU (Ukraine's state security service) told a press conference in Kiev, Ukraine's capital. "He also said he wanted to perpetrate acts of terror in protest."
