Turkey says Pope Francis's recognition of the Ottoman-era killings of Armenians as genocide during his recent visit to Armenia won't help efforts to establish peace and stability in the Caucasus region, the Washington Post website reports today (June 27, 2016).
A Turkish statement issued today said the pope had "disappointed" the Turkish people with remarks and accused him of "bias" and "religion-based discrimination" against Turkey.
Turkey rejects the term genocide regarding a million and one-half Armenians killed between 1914 and 1918.
Turkey claims the killed Armenians were casualties of World War I.
