Libyan Govt. Troops Clash with IS in City of Sirte; Seek to Oust IS from Its Most Land Held in Africa

In Libya the Islamic State (IS) group is battling to hold on to its stronghold of Sirte after forces aligned with the new unity government advanced on the Mediterranean coastal city, the Euro News website reports today (June 9, 2016).

Security sources said government forces made ground in the eastern and southern outskirts of Sirte, taking control of at least one IS military camp.

A hospital spokesman said at least six brigade members had been killed and 30 wounded in the clashes.

The units launched a counter-offensive against IS last month from their base in the western city of Misrata, pushing the militants back along the coastal road of Sirte. The IS's control of Sirte and its surrounding area has become its largest landholding outside of Iraq and Syria.
