The Daily Mail (British) website reports that thousands of Syrians fled to Lebanon today (March 4, 2012) in one of the biggest surges across the border in a single day, since the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad began a year ago.
Some 2,000 Syrians fled today -- according to the United Nations' refugee agency -- as people tried to escape the shelling and other violence.
The surge comes as U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned on March 2 that he had received "grisly reports" that Syrian troops were executing and torturing people in Homs, after insurgents abandoned their positions.
A Reuters witness on the Lebanese-Syrian border heard heavy shelling coming from the nearby Syrian town of Qusair earlier today, and saw mainly women and children fleeing toward Lebanon on foot.
