The Reuters website reports today (March 9, 2012) that Israel has asked the United States for advanced "bunker buster" bombs and refueling planes that would improve its ability to attack Iran's nuclear sites, an Israeli official has revealed.
The official -- who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of Israel's request -- said the request was made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a visit with President Barack Obama at the White House this week.
The official played down reports as being "unrealistic" that state the U.S. would supply Israel with any military equipment it wants -- but only if Israel promises the U.S. that it will not attack Iran this year. Netanyahu -- who did not agree to such a promise -- told Obama that no decision has been made yet on just when Israel will attack Iran.
President Obama opposes an Israeli attack on Iran this year -- Obama is running for re-election in November -- as he fears he would lose many votes if a pre-election Israeli attack were to occur.
