The Blaze website reports today (March 31, 2012) that Vanderbilt University's nondiscrimination policy that requires campus Christian groups to allow nonbelievers to serve in leadership roles has resulted in Vanderbilt Catholic -- one of the largest faith clubs at the school -- to announce that it will not comply with the new policy.
The Catholic group's decision will mean that -- as of the end of the school year -- it will no longer be an official university group.
The dispute between Vanderbilt -- which is located in Nashville, Tennessee -- and its religious groups began after a Christian fraternity expelled a gay member. That led the school to ensure that all student groups comply with its nondiscrimination policy.
Under Vanderbilt's new policy, all students should be allowed to be members of campus groups. Moreover, every individual -- regardless of belief -- should be allowed to run for office.
