Patriarch Kirill: Punk Band Did Work of the Devil; Annoyed Some Russians Want Leniency of Band

The Guardian (British) website reports today (March 25, 2012) that a feminist punk band -- which staged an unsanctioned performance in Moscow's principal cathedral -- was doing the work of the devil, according to the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Russian Patriarch Kirill said "the devil laughed at us" when Pussy Riot performed their song Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Expel Putin, in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior less than two weeks before Russia's presidential elections.

Three members of the Pussy Riot have been arrested since the "punk prayer," and remain in prison awaiting trial on hooliganism charges. All face sentences of up to seven years in prison.

Patriarch Kirill was annoyed by some Russians calling for leniency for the punk band. "My heart breaks from bitterness that amongst these people there are those who call themselves Orthodox," Patriarch Kirill said.
