Russian Church Official Calls for Trips to Kosovo; Says Kosovo Shrines Will Transform All Visitors

Deputy head of the Moscow Patriarchate Department of External Church Relations, Archpriest Nikolay Balashov, today (October 6, 2010) suggested organizing Orthodox pilgrimages from around the world to shrines in Kosovo.

He told the Interfax-Religion website that every person who has visited Pec Patriarchate, the Gracanica, in Monastery Visoki Decani "will never forget this visit and will be transformed."

Father Nikolay urged to "seriously think about the future of these shrines of universal importance, about what should be done to preserve them, and provide access for Orthodox pilgrims from various parts of the world."

The priest also said that monks who stay in Kosovo monasteries were leading concentrated prayerful life there, despite "the great difficulties and constant fears for their security."
