Bin Laden Tape Targets France for First Time; Claims Burqa Ban Justifies French Killings

In an audio tape aired on Al Jazeera television on October 27, 2010, al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden targeted French interests, claiming the country's burqa ban and the presence of French troops in Afghanistan justified the killing of French nationals.

"As you wrongly have decided that you have the right to ban Muslim women from wearing the veil, is it not our right to expel your invading men by attacking them?" bin Laden asked, according to the France 24 website.

The latest message marked the first time bin Laden specifically targeted his message at the French people.

French officials said the tape appeared to be authentic.
