Firefighters Allow Family's House to Burn Down; Homeowner Failed to Pay $75 Fee, "Out of Luck"

The Alter Net website reports today (October 5, 2010) that firefighters in a rural town in Obion County, Tennessee intentionally let a family's house burn to the ground last week, because the owner did not pay a $75 fee.

Gene Cranick, owner of the burned home, had not paid the $75 fee for fire protection service offered to the county's residents.

Consequently, when firefighters came to the scene, they just stood there -- with their equipment on the trucks -- while Cranick's house burned to the ground.

Cranick offered to pay whatever it would take firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late.

Mayor David Crocker said, "If owners don't pay, they're out of luck."

I find this situation incredible. Where are the Christian -- or even human -- values of these firefighters and the mayor? If people were trapped in the burning house, would the firefighters still just stand there?

Indeed, these firefighters and the mayor are a disgrace to humanity!
