Patriarch Kirill Recalls Atheism in Soviet Russia; Says Secular Trend in Europe Makes Same Mistake

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said today (October 13, 2010) that the situation with religion in some European countries reminds him of the times of militant atheism in the communist Soviet Union, according to the Interfax-Religion website.

"I am deeply convinced that modern civilization is making the same mistake as the Soviet Union," the Patriarch said while meeting with German President Christian Wulff in Moscow today.

The Russian Church has lived for decades in a country where the official ideology was the ideology of atheism, Patriarch Kirill added.

He concluded that philosophies come and go, but the Christian faith has existed for 2,000 years and it "formed the spiritual and cultural foundation of Europe."
